Good News of Great Joy

Have you ever heard an angel speak? Would you need to be someone special, or famous, or important, to see and hear an angel?

The Bible tells us that the most humble of people witnessed an angel who brought good news of great joy from the Lord God.

Simple shepherds were tending to sheep and living outdoors in the pitch black of night. Suddenly intense light burst through the darkness and a bright angel appeared to them. The shepherds were terrified by this blinding vision. No doubt they fell to the ground.

But the angel calmed them, saying “Do not fear.” Then the angel spoke words that lifted them up in triumphant proclamation, “Behold, I bring you good news of great joy. Unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.”

The shepherds must have looked amazed to hear that the Promised One had finally come. As jubilation grew in their hearts, it was magnified by innumerable multitudes of angels, declaring “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men!”

When the angels returned to heaven, darkness returned over the fields. The shepherds immediately journeyed to Bethlehem, where they found Jesus, just as they had been told by the angel. Then the shepherds praised God and spread His good news of great joy.

This history is from the Gospel of Luke in the Holy Bible. In writing what the angel spoke, Luke used the Greek word “euengelion”  which means “good news of great joy.” That  word “euengelion” is the root of the English word “evangelize.”

On this day, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that I may bring His glad tidings.
